The project interventions are concentrated in three watershed areas in three different districts of North Karnataka. These watersheds were partly covered during the first phase of the project (see table).

Preparatory activities may be taken up in a fourth district. The project is exploring the possibilities of other partnership arrangements (e.g. working with Panchayat Raj Institutions) in this district. A budget under the head of 'second batch options' is available for this purpose. However, the initiation of preparatory activities will be taken up only if there is a potential for implementation in a new project phase.

The identification of the area and villages has been done by the project partners and is based on the location of the sub watershed and the priorities of the people. The area proposed for development, varies from 3,000-3,500 ha per watershed covering 6-8 villages (details below). The extent of the operations (area to be developed) has been determined on the basis of the envisaged participatory processes, available time, capacities and funds.
