capturing the processes contd.

Report of a workshop held on February 20-21st , 2004 at MYRADA-PIDOW, Kamlapur

The case presentations mainly focused on processes that are in the form of steps, procedures, decisions, actions etc. They were more oriented towards implementation of activities than the systematic capturing of social changes that occur due to project interventions. It was quite clear that partner NGOs needs clarity on understanding the socio-economic changes and how to monitor, capture them systematically.

The workshop moved further in deepening of understanding the process of social changes that occur in the villages. This was done through small group discussions, analysis, plenary summing up and inputs from the facilitator.

A common understanding was emerged that process is not pre designed, but changes according to the situation/ context. The project consists of a mix of both evolutionary and pre-designed elements. It was felt that framework for process monitoring is necessary, but at the same time it should not be a rigid system of formats, standard indicators etc.

Good process monitoring is one, which captures people’s perspective and experiences. The interveners should be open and the community should be involved and explained about the purpose of process monitoring in an open manner.

It is felt that effective learning oriented processes could be achieved through lower physical & financial targets. Successful process approach will result in to the standardization / documentation of best practices, for adoption. There is a need to re-look at the processes happening during our routine works and to decide how to capture and document the processes.

The partner NGOs shared and reflected on experiences openly, both positive and critical, while presenting individual cases. All the three NGO partner staff and PSMU could work out an example on how could they document the process of social change within the time and resources available in the project. The staffs that have participated in the workshop were confident to organize case studies on processes of socio-economic changes, themselves.

Overall it was felt that the workshop helped in better understanding of monitoring and documenting the process of socio-economic changes in the project.
