A field trip was made by Dr. Jane Carter and Dr. Ashok Alur to Taveragera for documentation of partner experiences. These are excerpts from the back-to-office report.

Economic changes at household level in ISPWDK villages

Date: 3-4th February 2005

SAMUHA is planning to collect further details on migration, livestock owned, etc as a start towards documenting economic changes brought about from the opportunity of paid labour in the watershed villages. In support of this initiative, a visit was made to two villages Adavibhavi and Garjanal.

Interviews were conducted with various labourers as short case studies. A Well Being ranking exercise was also conducted, the purpose being to find out who had benefited from the watershed works, and who, if anyone, had not - or had even experienced negative effects – and why. In the view of the respondents, no-one had been disadvantaged; everyone in the village had benefited to some extent (at least through an improvement in the land). The selection of the individuals was largely determined by who happened to be available (in Garjanal it was from labourers working that day), but cannot be said to be random or necessarily representative of the village.

The information recorded is preliminary and should be further investigated through the more detailed data collection planned by SAMUHA.
