The pilot project will aim to capacitate all the members of 4 villages and 12 hamlets coming under Bonthi GP to plan, manage the natural resources of land, water, and biomass on an equitable and sustainable manner. The project will empower the women, marginalized sections of the community by supporting them with necessary resources and the skills to come out of poverty and backwardness. The pilot project aims at capacitating the Grama Panchayath and its ward sabhas to become a true local self-governance institution. A sub-committee of the GP will contain due representation from all the ward sabhas, CBOs/SHGs for preparing micro plans for various activities related to development and management of natural resources and livelihood activities to support the poor with the active involvement of all in the ward sabhas, CBOs/SHGs in the GP. The GP and the sub-committees shall carry out the implementation and management of the activities with the necessary support from the Steering Committee, government functionaries from various development departments and SDC/IC PSMU.

Expected Results

  • Members of the Gram Sabha in the selected villages have internalized the concepts of decentralization, participation, equity and sustainability to the point that they are able to plan and manage natural resources on this basis.
  • At least 50 women are effective community leaders who are actively involved in decision-making.
  • Documentation of experiences in the involvement of Gram Panchayats in the management of natural resources is widely available (in the appropriate language) in the project area and at state level.
  • On the basis of participatory evaluation, members of the Gram Sabha and Gram Panchayat representatives in the project area demonstrate sufficient skills in the management of natural resources to serve as a resource for a future PRI based integrated natural resources management project.
