backyard A case study by women SHG members
Saradabhai w/o Bandappa Saradabai is a member of Ramabhai Mahila Sangha situated separately since they are scheduled caste families, which is the general pattern of the village settlement. Like Imabi, she had purchased 8 hens and two cocks four months ago. Two cocks died due to disease and 8 hens are alive. One hen already laid eggs and hatched 11 chicks, but 6 died due to predators like cat, mongoose. The reasons for more of damages are due to the absence of cock, which normally protects the young chicks from the attack of these predators. Saradabhai is aware of this problem and she said that she would buy the cocks. Probably some external pressure is required to speed up the purchases. She very well knows the benefit of poultry rearing. She said there a need for regular sale of hens which someone buy at their doorsteps at reasonable prices. It was also found out that they need a local persons trained in health care/management preferably two/three married women members of the SHGs who could provide treatments to the poultry birds by utilizing the local resources. Educating the women on clean drinking water to birds and giving little more supplement food in addition to open grazing and sufficient housing to accommodate more birds when required. We thank Mrs. Imabi w/o Masthan and Mrs Saradagi Saradabhai w/o Bandappa of Sugur village for their time, information and experiences for wider sharing |
