PRAWARDA has touched, cared for and improved living conditions in around 10000 families in 75 villages of Basavakalyan Taluk, Bidar District, during the last eight years.


PRAWARDA is a registered non-governmental organisation established in the year 1994 with the objective of striving for the development of Bidar region with commitment and dedication.

"To develop sustainable institutions of the people, for the people, through a process of capacity building, providing linkages to enable an efficient management of natural resources by them and create opportunities for respectable and sustainable livelihood in Rural Areas."

PRAWARDA in Basavakalyan TalukDuring the past eight years, the organisation has grown to be a reliable friend and guide for people in the rural areas of Bidar district particularly in Basvakalyan Taluk.

PRAWARDA has so far partnered with development agencies, both governmental and non-governmental, in implementation of projects worth over Rs. 25.00 million. It has accomplished the objectives set out for it in these projects and acquired technical, administrative and operational competency of high standards in carrying out development projects with people's participation.

PRAWARDA and Community
The strength of PRAWARDA is its base in the community. Over the years, it has earned the respect of people in the area because of its dedicated approach as a friend and guide. The following achievements indicate the magnitude of relations between the community and PRAWARDA:

  • PRAWARDA has touched, cared for and improved living conditions in around 10000 families in 75 villages of Basavakalyan Taluk, Bidar District, during the last eight years.
  • Around 300 self-help groups covering over 6000 families have been formed in the area.
  • These groups own funds of around Rs. 10.50 million while bank borrowings are to the extent of Rs. 10.20 million and the debt equity ratio is less than 1. This indicates the upswing in the financial capabilities of these families.
  • These groups have had a turnover of over Rs. 60.00 million in terms of loans to its members.
  • Under three watershed development projects, PRAWARDA has promoted 12 watershed management committees (WMCs) in 14 villages and capacitated them to plan, implement and manage watershed structures in 9000 ha area with an asset value of over Rs. 15.00 million.
  • Presently, PRAWARDA is promoting Village Development Societies, which are comprehensive village development institutions conceived in five villages for implementation of watershed development activities under Phase 2 of ISPWDK.
  • PRAWARDA has been responsible for promoting and implementing sustainable agricultural practices in around 800 acres of land, enabling families engaged in agriculture to reduce use of inorganic material on their farms by 40% and thereby reduce the cost of cultivation.
  • PRAWARDA has been responsible for promoting and developing modules for income generation activities in both agriculture and allied activities and non-farm sectors for bettering livelihood opportunities in all the project villages touched so far. The concept of self help and federation of self-help groups is being given encouragement and support in all possible ways to achieve this end.

Research and Development
PRAWARDA has consciously worked to grow with people and to develop material that will benefit them in everyday life. It has developed an organic manure called Vasundhara using local resources, which is quite popular. Farmers have started preparing the formulation on their own as well. PRAWARDA has also been instrumental in promoting composting, vermicompost \manufacturing, organic and bio-pesticides and growth promoters as well as seed (germplasm) preservation techniques.

PRAWARDA publishes reading material on its experiences regularly. Its quarterly periodical Susthira Abhivruddhi (Sustainable Development) is published in Kannada and has a circulation of over 1000 copies in the Basavakalyan Taluk alone. Leaflets are regularly published on individual experiences and excellent case studies and role models of development in the Upper Mullamari watershed area.
