Samamma and her son

Samamma and her son

Samamma and her husband Irappa (not in the picture) are in their late 40s/50s, and have five children – of whom three have already married and left the home. They are left with one son and daughter. They are landless, have no animals, and live in a rented house. Both Samamma and Irappa worked as labourers during the project period – he for 3-4 months, she for 2 months. At that time, they say, they had enough to eat. However, they did not manage to save any money for the future; it got used up (they did not expressly say so, but probably it went for the marriages of their three children). Thus they have nothing now. She is also not a member of a Munjavu group as she does not have sufficient cash to join and start saving.
