The Village Development Society (VDS) is an institution registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act (1960). VDS is expected to take on the responsibility of the implementation of village development activities in a sustainable manner. VDS MeetingIt is capacitated to manage the watershed and other developmental activities envisaged in ISPWDK.

In Maramuri and Upper Mullamari watersheds the VDS has a two-tier structure consisting of a general body (GB) and a governing council (GC). In the Kanakanala watershed, a three-tier structure has been adopted. VDS is accountable for the funds that will be given as advance by the NGO for the execution of watershed development activities.

The Village Development Society facilitates the preparation of watershed development plans; reviews and approves watershed rehabilitation plans and plans for non land-based development (livelihood promotion) in ISPWDK; receives, operates and maintains funds for land-based and non land-based development activities in ISPWDK; supports the implementation of village development interventions; supervises the execution of the activities; monitors and evaluates the activities; maintains accounts and records; and establishes linkages with various actors.
