fifth EF meeting
- background note

Subject: Biomass & Energy in Semi-arid regions.

Date: 11th to 13th April 2005

Biomass Study at the end of ISPWDK Phase 1

Towards the end of Phase 1, a biomass study was carried out in one village in one watershed (Sastapur in Upper Mullamari, Bidar District – working with the partner PRAWARDA). The main objective of this study, conducted in March 2000 with AME support, was to formulate a strategy for biomass development in ISPWDK watershed areas in Northern Karnataka to sustain the development of farming, based on high levels of organic matter application for soil fertility management. A second objective of the study was to determine to what extent the livelihoods of the people of Sastapur depend on the biomass in the watershed. This included aspects of biomass use for energy.

Integrating energy initiatives in watershed interventions

In July 2003, the idea of integrating energy initiatives in watershed interventions was followed up, with TERI being invited to conduct a pilot energy assessment study (waste, fuel source and energy audit) in the same watershed (Upper Mullamari). The results were reported in October 2003. The study evoked the interest of the other two partners (MYRADA and SAMUHA), and as a result pilot studies were also carried out in the other ISPWDK watersheds (Maramuri, Gulbarga District and Kanakanala, Koppal District). The pilot studies (submitted in final form in February 2005) indicated considerable potential for energy savings in various household and community level activities. In particular, the following interventions were recommended: implementation of improved cooking devices, improved ventilation in the houses, use of tube lights and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and installation of biogas plants to meet cooking energy needs.

While the partners MYRADA and SAMUHA agreed to pursue energy interventions independently, in Upper Mullamari watershed, PRAWARDA followed up on certain recommendations – notably improved cook stoves (chulas), energy efficient kerosene lamps, and improved jaggery ovens.
