Background

Semi-arid areas are often resource scarce in terms of water, soil, vegetation, energy resources, etc. During the previous years, ISPWDK focused on watershed development activities, to improve the natural resources for enhancing productivity of land and improving the socio-economic conditions of the resource poor households. After several brainstorming sessions, it was thought fit to amalgamate energy initiatives in the watershed areas of semi-arid regions.

Energy in the context of ISPWDK

The partners of ISPWDK, MYRADA, SAMUHA and PRAWARDA have been working on watershed development in the regions of Gulbarga, Koppal (recently formed district, earlier Raichur), and Bidar districts. To integrate energy initiatives, the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) was approached. TERI’s initiatives in technology development for rural applications cover energy efficient workstove, biogas plant, briquetting, low cost water heaters, pyrolyser stove, gasifier application for various thermal applications such as mushroom drying, cardamom drying, silk dyeing units, cocoon cooking, electrical applications etc. Some of the TERI technologies are of interest and relevance to the ISPWDK project area to promote with people's participation for greater sustainability.

TERI took up a study that in ISPWDK with the objective of incorporating energy issues in the ISPWDK watershed areas. The study covered Waste Audit, Fuel Source Audit and Energy audit. One pilot village from phase 2 was taken up in each of the watershed areas of Maramuri, Kanakanala, and Upper Mullamari of MYRADA, SAMUHA AND PRAWARDA respectively. Data resulting from a questionnaire and a survey was analysed to providean overview of energy consumptions, operational performances, resources avaiable etc.
