cpr management CPR activities in Maramuri Watershed VFC formation in the Phase 2 area: The DCF (Social Forestry), Gulbarga held an orientation event about VFCs with MYRADA staff and VDS resource persons in July 2003. There are already two VFCs existing in the Phase-II villages, namely Sugur and Kodli. Kodli VFC is not very active compared with that of Sugur. The formation of two more VFCs is planned, and the DCF has agreed to support this by attending the Gram Sabha. registration of VFCs and in the preparation of the micro plan, etc. Supply of plant material: Technical support/orientation to the staff was provided by the KFD on matters such as planting methods and techniques. The supply of 10,000 saplings was also promised, although only 5,331 materialized, from the Raichur area (that is, some distance away). The Bidar Forest Department provided 10,000 agave suckers, whilst locally 3,000 agave suckers were moblised. All these were planted on the upper reaches of the watershed, and around water harvesting structures. Additionally, the forest department has supplied 20,000 seedlings of different sizes from the nursery from Chincholi at a cost decided by the department. They are Neem (Azadiracta indica), Pongamia pinnata, and Cassia siamea. Fodder seeds like Sylosanthus (about 200 kg), as well as 100 kg of Cassia siamea and 50 kg of Pongamia pinnata were purchased for seed dibbling. By September 2003, seed dibbling was completed and germination had started in both CPR and PPR sites. Community participation: All the above activities were planned with the VDS members and staff. The community members were involved in mobilizing the seedlings, distributing and sowing the seeds. MYRADA facilitated the process. The community members are taking more responsibility for tree planting along roadsides, in their fields, around their homes and in the communal areas of schools, temples etc. |
