upcoming events...

The major events planned for the period of January to March 2003, are as follows:

Watershed Development:

Completion of pending works in 410 ha of Vitlapur and Tavaragera in Phase 1. The government of Karnataka, one of the partners in Phase 1 implementation, had undertaken land-based activities. However, it was unable to take up certain bunding work and wasteweirs.

Implementation of watershed development has already begun in Phase 2 villages of the project. Land treatments will be completed in 142 ha of Sasvihal by the end of March 2003.

Pending land treatments in 6 ha of pilot watershed at Myadardokki will be completed.

Community Organisation

Construction of a water tank measuring 5" x5" x10" , for the livestock in Narinal village. Due to shortage of drinking water in the summer months, the community felt the need to construct a water tank for providing drinking water to their livestock.

Construction of a platform near the bus stop in Idlapur village. The bus shelter at Idlapur is very narrow, and cultural norms prohibit men and women from standing under the shelter together. Thus, when men stand under the shelter, the women shy away bearing the brunt of the natural elements. Due to this, it was decided to construct an additional platform near the bus stop.

Construction of shelves in the government school in Amarapur to store scientific equipments and aides.

The community has initiated the above activities, for which it contributes free labour and the necessary materials. The project will also financially support these activities.

Livelihood Options

A women's cooperative, the Munjavu Mahila Sahakar (MMS), will be established in the period of Feb-Mar 2003. The Sub-Registrar of Koppal District granted permission on December 24, 2002, for the same. By establishing the MMS, the Munjavu groups have successfully accomplished one of their objectives.

By establishing dairies as livelihood options in the project villages, the process of milk marketing has been initiated. This activity would be undertaken by the MMS. Apart from milk marketing, milk products like curd, butter, ghee, etc. will be sold in the dairy; and a milk parlour will also be established.

Exposure visits for Munjavu groups will be organised, to give them an understanding of how to initiate micro enterprises. There are plans to take them to Haveri District in Feb-Mar 2003.

Agriculture Production

Evaluation of Farmers Field School (FFS), Integrated Nutrient Management (INM)/ Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and Participatory Technology Programmes (PTD).

Exposure visits will be conducted for FFS, INM/IPM, PTD and Dry Land Horticulture (DLH) farmers.
